Abstract

The semantic connection between smart cities and MultiSensors requires semantic interpretation and integration to avoid data silos and effectively utilize diverse heterogeneous data. However, existing studies—which proposed standardized stream structures or defined ontologies for sensor domains—were limited to serial data, failed to precisely define metadata, focused solely on single-measurement sensors, or introduced nonstandardized novel structures without evaluating their impact on efficiency and utility. Therefore, this article defines an Web Ontology Language (OWL)-based MultiSensor Ontology, constructed using the OWL and existing sensor standards, capable of integration with 3-D city models within a digital twin system context. We aim to resolve structural disparities in heterogeneous sensor data, ensure the consistency and efficiency of semantic queries, and propose a framework for converting existing instances into this model. The proposed framework performs geospatial integration following the MultiSensor Semantic Modeling step, which consists of three processes: observation-centric representation, which graphically interprets and converts the observation perspective of MultiSensors; Uniform individual identification, which generalizes metadata class definitions and individual generation; and semantic metadata aggregation, which collects and links these individuals with measurement values and metadata. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed ontology model, three experiments are conducted using real-world instance semantic graphs. First, we inject metadata connection errors into the semantic graph linking collected buildings and sensors to verify whether the reasoner can detect them. Second, we load multiple buildings and MultiSensors based on the proposed structure to analyze optimization effects by confirming the feasibility of cross-domain queries and comparing query processing times with and without semantic metadata aggregation. Third, based on the ontology integration with the urban spatial geographic model, we construct a dynamic knowledge graph (DKG) within an indoor temperature and humidity control scenario and confirm the feasibility of executing reasoning-based queries. Experimental results demonstrate that the Digital Twin MultiSensor ontology modeling framework using the proposed OWL-based structure is free of logical errors in actual building environments. Furthermore, it is proven that the framework can improve query processing performance by up to 179.75 times in appropriate scenarios and realize dynamic knowledge generation by linking urban indoor spaces and complex sensors through reasoning-based queries via integration with spatial ontologies.
